Get started with your class
teachChat (also written “Teach Chat”) is for in-person lessons in U.S. schools, grades 7 and up. Teachers use a Google account and Google Drive; students need a modern browser on a Chromebook, laptop, tablet, or phone. Use a desktop or laptop and projector to show chat over your slides. No student email or app installation is required.
- Create your classSign in and connect Google Drive. Your student roster will be saved there.
- Share your join codeStudents choose a screenname and enter their first name and last initial. They don’t need to sign up for an account.
- Approve join requestsEach student’s name saves to your Drive before you approve them. If you decline, their pending roster entry is deleted.
What else can my class do?
Students can write study notes together, earn participation points, and use stickers. Add teams and leaderboards if they work for your class.
Show chat alongside your slides, a YouTube video, or a PDF, and save class work to Google Drive.
How does student privacy work?
Students use screennames in chat. Their names are saved to your Google Drive, not our database. Names are processed temporarily for joins and teacher-requested reveals or exports; name reveals are recorded in an audit log. There are no ads or data sales.
